The increasing emphasis on public accountability and institutional rankings in the Canadian PSE sector suggests that generally accepted research impact measures will be increasingly important in the coming years. Research faculty members and university administrators face growing pressure to demonstrate the value of their work to external stakeholders, and to make evidence-based decisions when investing in research. This presentation first sketches the main rationales for academics in the humanities, creative arts and social sciences to take the lead in developing their own common research impact metrics, and then proposes some methodological principles for such an undertaking.
