Rímur, long narrative poems generally intended to be delivered orally, sung or chanted, were far and away the most important secular poetic genre in Iceland from the late middle ages to the beginning of the 20th century. In this Beck Trust Lecture, Matthew James Driscoll (University of Copenhagen) discusses this highly interesting but little-known genre.
