French immersion programs are not free from ideologies on the teaching of language and learning of French in Canadian society.  In this presentation, Sylvie Roy discusses the views of young people, parents, teachers and administrators on the subject of French immersion. Based on ethnographic research in six Alberta French immersion schools, and using the sociolinguistics of change as a starting point, she will present data collected from interviews and observations made in elementary and junior high school classrooms. Among other things, she will examine discussions and ideas on bilingualism, immersion teaching practices and the engagement of young people in their learning, while being careful to establish a link between the views expressed and the reasons behind them.

Presentation in French.
